On 10 April 2019, EU leaders met at a special European Council Article 50 meeting to discuss Brexit. There, it was agreed to give the United Kingdom a six-month flexible extension to Brexit. The new deadline of 31 October 2019, means that a no-deal Brexit was averted but also that the UK must now hold European elections in May, or leave on 1 June without a deal.
